So
is it about
making fun of
rape victims? No, it
is not, if
some people are
to be believed.
Many who use
#Rapface say they have
no intention of
making fun of
rape victims. The tagging
is just fun.
They say they
don’t think of
#Rapeface the wrong
way.
Of
course
there must be
people who mean
it the wrong
way. But then…..
You
can see people
with weird faces
and smiling in
a certain awkward
fashion being tagged
Rapeface on Instagram, YouTube and Twitter …almost everywhere.
So,
what is the big issue?
Rapeface is a meme
that first surfaced in 2008
and was not
just about "awkward smiles" but rather to label the
expression on the face of a man before he
is about to rape a
woman. Today, like I said,
many intend it as a joke and you
can find thousands of photos and videos on Instagram, Vine, YouTube
and Twitter tagged #rapeface.
Other
than
the word #rapeface
being used seriously
at some places….the
word has become
popular mostly with
the young who
tag each other
when an awkward
smiling photo flashes
somewhere on the
web.
So should
we just over look
the use of #rapeface because
it is just a word
and actually means
nothing to many
who use it? or
do words have
a deeper meaning?
Here
are the urban
dictionary meaning of
the word:
The face a man makes (usually bare teeth) before sexual penetration. For example:
I'm going to
show her my rape face.
The intense look of desire and decided action on a person’s face when they look at you and you know they are going to rape you. For example:
The intense look of desire and decided action on a person’s face when they look at you and you know they are going to rape you. For example:
John lost his rapeface once he
heard Maria talking
about the herps she
has. Then he turned his rapeface
to Sarah.
Every word has a
meaning. And more
so the meaning
of words depend
on the receiver. So
even if you
say rapeface in
an innocent manner
what I receive
might not be
innocent. Words have deep
psychological effects…for example
love, hate, promise, loyalty….every word means
something. Words are not
on their own
hanging in some
vacuum.
They
carry the desire,
the intent, the
act and then
consequences…the essence for
both the person
who said it
and the one
who received it . That is
why languages were
created in the
first place….that is
the whole purpose
of a language…to
convey , to communicate a
desire, intent, act….that
is what nouns, verbs, adverbs,
adjective etc
etc are all
about.
Why
does the word
‘Promise’ mean so
much? Why does
the word ‘Honesty’
matter so much
even amongst thieves? Then how
can rapeface though
still holding its
actual meaning become
part of fun?
With the number
of rapes rising and
the world still
not ready to
give up its ugly habit
of blaming the
victim #rapeface might
seem just another
way to make
fun of the victim.
How
long before sinister
words that carry
deadly intent lose
their meaning and
become a plaything? Something you
can throw loosely
around? What if
the word ‘Terrorist’
became a fun
thing? There must
be a million
sinister words what
about them? Yes, the
young and the
unaware might just
be fooling around
but to what
consequences?
So, should such powerful
and painfully humiliating
word be
used playfully?
What
do you say?
