Sounds like
a bad joke, right? Wrong.
A
few days ago
a 15 year
old maid/domestic worker was
found locked up in an
upmarket Delhi flat
in India. She had
been starved and
tortured in the
worst ways possible…boiling water
was poured on
her, her head was
tonsured, she
was branded with
hot iron, she
was made
to drink urine, kept naked…of
course starved…. and then
one day she
was rescued….
Now,
this is not
just one random
incident of horror….it
keeps coming up
in the media
very often. If you
dig deeper you
will get a
complete picture : it is not just
a case of
abuse of domestic
labor but human
trafficking in the
worst form.
Now, you
guys must have
heard a lot
about human trafficking. Right? What
do you understand
by it. These
are a few
thing that come to mind :
1.
sale and purchase
of human beings.
2.
the one who
sells is a
poor person.
3. mostly underworld
characters are involved
into this.
Most
people might not
connect human trafficking
with domestic labor
and even if
they do they
would like to
believe it is
more like an
international human trafficking….but there is
a huge market
for this in
India for India
by India.
After
some or
other domestic worker abuse case turns
up activists trains
their guns to
get domestic worker
rights….Hope it happens
soon but here is the
underlying ugliness to
it all something
that is approved
and accepted by
the likes of
you and me……
Most
of the middle
class/ upper class society
in India find
it a status
symbol to have maids….as
many number of maids
greater the status. There
is a positive side
to this: many people
are employed this
way. Good for everyone
as long as
no one rights
are abused.
Let us
get into this
live –in –maid situation as an
ugly face of
human trafficking:
Firstly let
me tell you
all live-in-maids are
not illegal. Many are
employed by registered
maid agencies but
many across the
spectrum of society
employ maids illegally.
Here is how
it is done :
Live-in-maids come
at a huge
cost. For example if
I live in
Mumbai and want
a live-in-maid from
a registered maid
services. I will
have to dole
out at least
10,000 rupees per month.
This is too much
for
many who want
a good bargain
and especially when
there are ample
short cuts available.
So
what do they
do?
They
connect to certain
middle men from
the poorest states
of this country…
For example
if I am
a Bengali and want
a Bengali speaking
maid I will
contact a middle
man in West Bengal
…then this middle
man will get
in touch with a
poor family who
wants to get rid of
their
poverty somehow.
The same
is if you
want a maid
from Bihar or UP or
any other place
of your choice….India
has enough poverty
and middle men
to be of
service to the better
off…..
Usually
people
look for the
following in a
live-in- maid :
1.
the girl/ boy has
to be young somewhere between
8 to 15
years. It is easy
to
train this category .
2. they should
be healthy .
3. compatible with
the language spoken.
4.
The poorer the better. A rebellious
attitude
is almost nil
in this category.
5. if there
is a trend
in the family
or village even
better. The child
and the parents know
what they are
getting into.
Now
the middle man
has found you a
family that is horribly
poor and wants to
get out of
poverty somehow.
Then what
is done?
A
good bargain is
set by a
middle man. A
girl or a boy, who
is young, healthy, not
of marriageable is
marked. It is
important that he/ she
is not of
marriageable age because it
is difficult to control
the
youth…..you see hormones
don’t care
if someone is
poor or rich. So
basically he/she
should be fit for
all chores like cooking, washing, cleaning, gardening…anything you
can think of. The poor
family hands over the
marked
child to the wanna be
employer for a
certain sum of
money….5,000RS-10,000RS. The middle man
gets a cut
and the child
leaves with the
employer to his
work place as
a live-in-maid.
Yes,
he/ she is sold
but to make
it sound better
this is a
token money….now….
During
this
process there are
certain terms of
employment that the
employer promises verbally, not
written silly :
1. The boy/ girl will
get two times
food.
2. Two pair
of clothing per
year.
3.
A soap bar,
tooth paste, tooth
brush, towels…etc…etc….for
his daily needs
which will be
deducted from his
salary.
4.
He/ she gets to
visit his/her home
once a year.
5.
He/ she will get
a salary of
some 500 or
1000 rupees which
he/she can send to
his parents if
he/she wants to,
after deduction.
6. If there
is any medical
expenses during this
duration it will
be deducted from
his/ her salary and
if the illness
is dangerous to
life and limb
the boy/girl will
be send back to his
parents and is
not the responsibility of
the employer .
7.
He can write
letter but with
the permission of
the employer. All other
correspondence with his
home/ family is considered
to only take
place when he/ she
comes to visit
home.
8. He/she will
live at the
employers home for
the rest of
the time till
the employer finds
him useless or a burden.
9. he/ she will
get to sleep
in the house.
Other than
this basic unspoken
slavery/ bonded labor or
whatever you call
it the domestic worker/ live-in-maid is
at the mercy
of the employer….let
the employer be
a saint or
be a devil,
a rapist, a
sadist or anything.
This
sounds like a
very harsh employment
agreement but if
you ask a
half naked, hungry
extremely poor family that
is fighting to
just keep themselves
alive…. it is better
to send a
child to work
at some random
home than sell
them to a
brothel or watch them die of hunger and some disease….
and that
is how exactly
thousands of poor children
are getting
into working as
live-in-maids at homes
in India….No, not only
the rich guys
do this but
many middle class educated
households in
India are into this.
So,
what I have
to say is
this :
Many of these domestic workers abuse cases that
keep coming up are
not just about
domestic labor but about
human trafficking that
is not just
accepted but approved
by certain classes
that call themselves
affluent and educated. Yes, this
kind of human
trafficking has become
a status symbol
for many homes
across India.
So, just
getting them the
employment rights won’t do….the middle
men have to be punished
and so should
this class of
society that believes
that having a
live-in-maid at the
expense of humanity
is a status
symbol.
yes, when goons do it, it is horrible but when the affluent and the educated do it it is more than dehumanizing.
Stop this kind of labor it is no less than slavery.

There is a demand from richer families and this is the reason why human-trafficking is happening! This somehow reinforces the social responsibilities the rich families should have!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jas. Each one us is responsible for what happens in society. Human trafficking by goons is shit but that done by educated affluent class is more dehumanizing , I think.
