How to write a juicy book
How does any writer write a juicy book? Very simple: make too many friends and let them know you are available to listen to their sob stories including their deepest secrets anytime anywhere. Don’t mention the ‘deep secrets’ like a reporter, just give them a hint and under no circumstance ask them “tell me your secrets. Damn it!” That’s too eager and real bad manners.
So, have a little patience and trust my years of experience, they will tell you everything in due time. Due time means a dead line of two to three months and nothing more than that. Don’t wait forever, anyone who doesn’t gossip by then is not going to gossip without getting third degree! So, if their secrets are not pouring by then find new friends.
What to do once you have found a best friend :
Firstly : If they have a good gossip about anyone or anything listen to them attentively and take mental notes. Not actual ones because they might not like it! and anyway it is impossible to match writing speed to talking speed.
Secondly : you yourself gossip, but under no circumstances talk about yourself. Gossip anyway means talking about others! Thirdly: Take proactive steps like steering people in the direction of your favorite topic, i.e. the topic you wish to write about. For example if you are writing about sex try to steer people about opening their bedroom and bathroom doors for you. Encourage them accordingly. For example if someone is telling you how they are totally stuck to having sex in the missionary position tell them to experiment the Kamasutra and report back. Of course you shouldn’t be as blunt as preparing a questionnaire but, make the inquisition friendly, pleasing, informative and substantial enough to pen!
The advantage : By now you have already realized that gossip is based on barter system. You will have to gossip to get gossip and the faster you pass around gossip the faster it will come back in a more juicier form…and sooner than later all the gossip floating in your head will turn into a great story paving your way to your novel!
The pitfall : Now anyone who is or was a gossip monger knows what happens when they are caught in the middle of it and if you are a saint ask anyone who is not.
There is a Remedy for everything: Now, most professional writers in the business learn to do this gossip mongering in a surreptitious manner.. I read somewhere even Salman Rushdie passed around stories that his mother told him, after which she became a little cautious! Of course this Salman Rushdie incident I mentioned could just be my gossip but believe me even writers with the weirdest imagination need to get stories from somewhere! You can’t make something out of nothing!
This includes the ones writing about aliens and vampires too! Just because me and you don’t know any aliens and vampires or have such friends to recite their biographies doesn’t mean the writers of these books didn’t have any! And anyone trying to argue : I don’t have Bill Gates even as my Facebook friend and thus I can’t write his biography but that doesn’t mean someone else hasn’t or isn’t!
So as to summarize : make a big circle of family and friends and collect stories from them, without pride or prejudice.
Next: The actual development of characters
