rape? great now the police can be more corrupt !

                              

 

Remember  the  Dec 2012 gang  rape  in  Delhi? On Thursday  a  photojournalist  was  gang  raped  in  Mumbai.  Everyone  is  discussing,  again, why, where, when, what  is  rape?  By  the  time  I  get  to  type  this  sentence  there  is  a   rape   happening   somewhere  in  this  world. So  instead  of  being  a  smartass  and  re-discussing  what  has  been  discussed  a  thousand  times ….I  will  tell  you  a  particular   incident  and   leave  it  to  you  to  think  what  you  are  free  to,   but  must.

Firstly  a brief  about  what  happens   to  the  society  immediately  after  a  rape?

Everyone  is   shit  scared, especially  those  who  have   girls  at  home. Every  parent  first   tighten  the  curfew  limit. Girls/women  who  used  to  roam  the  streets  for  fun  or  job  or  whatever  till  say  11 PM  have  to  be  back  home  by  5 PM.  Everyone  naturally  gets  suspicious  of  any  boy/ man  around. It  is   a  natural  reaction.  Fear  has   that  power  on  us.

Of  course  the  police  is  also  highly  sensitive  during  these  times. They  obviously  have  to  save  their  jobs  and  get  promotions  and  that  is  only  possible  if  they  suspect  every  man/boy  to  be  potential  rapist  and  every  women  to  be  the  victim. So  they  work  extra   hours, man  the  junctions  more  carefully  and  watch  dark  areas  more  suspiciously.

Now,  just  like  expected  after  that  dastardly  rape  in  Delhi  everyone  was  agitated  and  worried   like  hell.  Most  parents  refused  to  let  their  girls  out  after  5 PM  and  people  began  keeping  out  an  eye  on  any  boy  hanging  out  with   any  girl  and  the  police  cooperated  wholeheartedly.  

                                                

How  did  the  police  cooperate? it's  an  actual  incident.

A  young  couple   was  standing  at  a  bus  stop  after  5 PM.  A  policeman  went  up  to  the  couple  and   escorted  them  to  a   decent  spot  close  by  to  his  jeep  which  has  more  of  policemen  like  himself.
The police  threaten  the  couple  and  demand  to  know  what  they  are  doing  out  so  late. During  the  unofficial  interrogation  the  police  also  comes  to  know  that  the  couple  is  having  an   affair  without   their   parents   knowledge….which  in  India  is  normal( most  Indians  do  not  like  to  flaunt  their  amorous  instincts  in  front  of  our  parents.) 

The  police  taking  advantage  of  the  situation   actually  go  on  like  this :

Police:  “It’s  because  of  girls  and  boys  like  you  we  have  to  work  three   shifts.  Do  you  know  how  dangerous  it  is  now  a  days?  First  you  walk  like  this  then  something   happens  and   then   everyone  is  crying  rape..rape.  Stupid  people. ”

The  boy  and   girl, “Sorry Sir,  we  will  immediately  go  back  home.  Please  let  us  go, Sir.”

Police, “Why  not?  We  are  here  only  to  do  your  service  while  you  do  timepass  behind  your  parents  back.”

The  boy  and  girl  have  understood  what  is  implies. And   the  boy  immediately  opens  his  wallet  and  hands  over  a  100  rupee. 

Now,  if  you  are  in  India (I  don’t  know  the  rules  of  other  countries)  if  you  are  ever in  the  presence  of  a  policeman/woman  you  should  ask  them  directly  how  much? Bribe,  what  else? Yes, yes,  there  is  no  need  to  feel  ashamed  or  embarrassed…you  can  ask  them  directly  and   they  will  tell  you. Of  course  if  you  are  in  police  station  don’t  ask  directly because  there  are  CCTV  cameras  everywhere.  There  you  will  have  to  give  money  in  envelope  and  that  too  hidden  amongst  papers  or  pretend  you  are  giving  a  wedding  invite  but  on  any  open  road  you  can  give  directly. Like  I  said  there  is  no  need  to  be  shy  when  giving  bribe …bribe  taking  is  almost  legal  here. (By  the  way  bribe  giving  is  illegal..taking  if  fine)

Let’s  get  back  to  the  incident : The  policemen  are  offended  by  the  100 rupee.  That  rape  in  Delhi  was  so  big  and  the  fear  around  even  bigger  and  only  100 rupee? Yuck.

Police: “ Do you  know  I  can  put  rape  charge  on  you  and   you  can  spend  the  rest  of  your  life  in  jail?”

The  boy  offers  another  100  rupee. Now  who  wants  to  go  in  jail? But  200 rupees  to  avoid  jail?

The  policeman  is  seriously  offended: “ What   we  will  do  is   we  will  take  you  to  the  police  station  and  inform  your  parents.” He  points  to  his  jeep  that  has  about  5  young  couples  huddled  in  there.

The  boy  and  girl  are  pushed  into  the  jeep  along  with  the  others.

Everyone  in  the  jeep  is  terrified. Who  wants  to  go  to  a  police  station   and  then  be  bailed  out  by  their  parents?  And  that  too  after  the  entire  country  is   so  god  dammed  agitated   and   worried   by  this  and   that  rape?  We  can  only  imagine  what  will  parents  do  if  they  catch  their  children  doing  time  pass  behind  their  backs  and  that  too  during  such  terrible  times! 

So  every  boy  empties  his  wallet  and  every  girl  empties  her  purse.

The  police  lets  them  go  home  with  a  stern   warning, “You  know  there  are  rapes  happening   everywhere.  You  should   not  stay  out  so  late.  Go   home   now.”

Thanks  to  these  rapes  that  keep  happening,  and  thanks  to  the  fear  these  rapes  create  in the   heart  of   parents,  police  have  become  great  entrepreneurs. 

                                 

And  a  point  to  note:  Do  you  know  the  police  uniform  and  the  postman’s   uniform   is  of  the  same  Khaki  color  in  India?  Maybe   that’s   why   the  police    don’t  know  if   they  are  supposed  to   deliver  letters   or   law.
